Kids In A New Groove seeks talented, passionate, dedicated volunteers to serve as Music Mentors to youth in foster care. By providing free, private, in-home music lessons, Music Mentors help our students not only to grow as musicians, but also teach them how to build trusting relationships and boost their self-confidence, creating a positive ripple effect that can improve students’ attitude, behavior, and performance at school.
Because we work with youth in foster care, volunteers must be 18 or older and willing to make a commitment of 24 service hours working with their student over the course of one year. Youth in foster care face constant instability, so building a consistent, reliable, long-term relationship is vital to the effectiveness of our program.
KING serves youth in foster care from ages 5-22 in the greater Austin area (Travis, Williamson, and Hays counties). We provide our students with an instrument of their choice and any necessary music lesson materials and accessories. KING students play a variety of instruments, from guitar and percussion to woodwinds, strings, and brass.

"As a teacher, I have been greatly influenced by my association with KING. The specialized training and workshops they provide have given me priceless insight and perspective and have made me a more thoughtful and effective mentor. I have witnessed first hand the powerful influence that music can have on a child’s confidence and self-esteem, as well as their intellectual and emotional health and development."
-Alan Retamozo, KING Mentor
"Foster children often lack the stable environment that is so crucial in a child’s life. With KING, they strive to stay with the children as long as possible having their teacher come to them, whether or not their living environment is stable or ever-changing."
-Missy Hance, past KING mentor
